Progression Documents

Using the 'I am a Clever Writer' approach provides us with detailed progression documents, which set out the progression in key writing skills for each genre covered, from Year 1 to Year 6.

'Progression of Skills':

This is a 50-page document which breaks down the National Curriculum statements, allowing us to show progression across each year group and through the school, for every writing skill.

This systematic approach to planning gives teachers the confidence in knowing that secure coverage of key skills is maintained both within their own year group, as well as year-on-year. It also helps avoid any gaps in learning, and provides consistency in the approach to writing from Year 1 to Year 6. It also contextualises the teaching of the writing skills being currently taught - teachers can also see at a glance what went before, and what comes after, in terms of the children's writing journey.

The plans set out progression in the following key skills for writing:

  • Adverbs
  • Conjunctions
  • Language and Word Choices
  • Prepositions
  • Sentence Punctuation & Organisation
  • Speech
  • Tenses

Progression of Genres':

In addition to the skills progression guidance, our planning is also underpinned by further guidance on how the genres progress and build up throughout the year groups.

This document sets out the detailed progression of success criteria for coverage of key writing skills in both fiction and non-fiction across the school.
