We carefully assess children's phonic knowledge and rigorously track their progress in phonics as they move through school. This enables us to identify any gaps in their understanding and take steps to 'close the gap'. To support this, we use an online tracking system - the 'Reading Assessment Programme' or RAP - which is aligned to the SFA phonics scheme.
As children progress in the development of their phonics and early reading skills, we assess them carefully at each step of the way.
We use ongoing teacher assessment in lessons as well as summative half-termly phonics assessments, which are logged on the RAP. This information is then used by our teachers to inform next steps in learning and to put in place any interventions, allowing us to focus on children's individual needs.
