Year Group Overviews
Working closely with the literacy consultants from Clever Writer, we have drawn up detailed planning overviews for writing, for Years 1 to 6.
These half-termly overviews are based around specially selected, high-quality texts for each half term. The texts are matched, where possible, to topics in science, history or geography and cover a broad range of topics, authors, themes and text types, including classic stories and poems, picture books, poetry and non-fiction texts.
The overviews set out the following:
- The texts & genres for the half term
- Progression within the genre(s) for writing sequence
- Grammar and Punctuation skills to be explicitly taught
- Handwriting skills to be covered
These overviews enable teachers to plan well-sequenced series of lessons, and inform the key writing skills to be taught week-on-week across the half term.
This approach ensures that teachers' planning for writing is thorough and consistent and supports continuity & progression within each year group, as well as progression year on year.
