Pie Corbett's Reading Spine
We have recently invested in new books to form a Reading Spine of core books for teachers to read aloud daily, from Nursery to Year 6.
Based on Pie Corbett’s Reading Spine, this is a core of books that create a living library inside a child’s mind. It is a store of classics and essential reads that help children engage at a deeper level and enter the world of the story.
The aim of our reading spine is to:
"Imagine a primary school where, over seven or eight years, children are read to, enjoy, discuss and work with a core of around 80 books. These ‘essential reads’ would be a store of classics, creating a living library inside a child’s mind. This is the ‘reading spine’. Schools that have a reading spine build a common bank of stories that bind the community together.”
'No Outsiders'
To further enrich and enhance our reading spine, we have added a collection of books recommended by 'No Outsiders' to ensure that children are offered a broad range of texts, ideas and themes to equip them for life in modern Britain and the society in which we live.
This inclusive book pack features a selection of 42 children's books, covering EYFS to Year 6, selected to support primary schools to develop a curriculum response to the Equality Act 2010.
Featuring diverse characters and themes, these books are intended to cover, in an age-appropriate way, ideas about gender, disability and difference, and celebrate diversity in all its forms.
